It is impossible to finish anything if you're a nice, well-rounded person. You might possibly finish a shopping list, but that's about it. Add to that the need to earn a living (I have three jobs), and meeting the social needs of friends/family and the first thing to get sacrificed is your book/album/exhibition. "It's coming," you find yourself saying. "I'm working on it."
You have to be selfish. This week I sent out a 'count me out for three months' email. This is as much for myself (so I'm not tempted to procrastinate when it gets tough) as it is to let others know not to be offended if I don't go to/listen to/read their stuff. It's also to explain why I get antsy if they casually drop in for three hours (you'd be surprised how often this happens when you work from home).
So if this is the year for you to do that thing you've been talking about, embrace your inner See You Next Tuesday. Say no to things. People will survive. And if you feel guilty saying no, ask yourself if you'd rather be accommodating or satisfied. But give it a time limit.
And for those on the 'creating binge' with me, who wrote a book in ten days (or your creative equivalent) let me know how you're progressing!
Here's to selfishness.
